Blazers Women's Basketball Defeats Covenant

JACKSON, Miss. - Belhaven Women's Basketball earned a 61-47 CCS victory over Covenant on Friday afternoon inside  Rugg Arena. The Blazers improved to 17-6 overall and 10-5 in CCS play with the win.

Hudson led the Blazers with 12 points, while Coleman added 11. Edwards finished with 10 points off the bench, and King and Jenkins each contributed nine as Belhaven placed five players in double figures or near double figures in the balanced effort.

First Quarter
Covenant struck first on a three-pointer from Emma Kaye Fuller, but Belhaven responded quickly. Katelyn Coleman scored inside to spark an 18-5 run midway through the quarter. Veronica Williams knocked down two three-pointers during the stretch, Jasi Jenkins converted a three-point play in the paint, and Kiersten Hudson buried a triple from the right wing to extend the lead to 10.

Violet Wright added a tip-in and Karrie Gaines hit a three to keep Covenant within reach, but Belhaven closed the period up 18-8 after holding the Scots to 3-of-16 shooting in the opening frame.

Second Quarter
Covenant trimmed the deficit early in the second behind Amanda Neff and Gaines, cutting the margin to eight after a three by Neff.

Belhaven answered with a key run. Kamren Edwards knocked down back-to-back three-pointers, RaMya King scored twice in the paint, and Tra'Shaylah Wilson and Amanda Walker contributed defensively to fuel transition opportunities. King's jumper at the 5:42 mark pushed the lead back to double digits at 28-18.

Neff converted in transition and Hall added a free throw late, but Belhaven carried a 32-24 advantage into halftime.

Third Quarter
The Blazers created separation in the third with their most important stretch of the game. After Wright scored inside to cut the lead to six, Belhaven responded with a 9-2 run. Coleman scored on consecutive fast-break layups, and Jenkins added a tip-in to extend the margin to 15.

Hudson and Coleman combined for five points during another push, and Jenkins finished inside again to cap a 13-3 surge that built a 45-31 lead. Wright hit a late jumper and free throw for Covenant, but Belhaven maintained a 45-34 edge heading into the fourth.

Fourth Quarter
Belhaven continued to control the tempo in the final period. Jenkins opened the scoring with a layup, and Edwards added another finish inside to keep the lead in double figures.

Hall and Wright each connected from beyond the arc to briefly trim the deficit to 12, but Hudson responded with a three-pointer at the 4:25 mark to halt the momentum. Moments later, she added two free throws to push the lead back to 14.

King sealed the game with a three-pointer in the closing minutes, extending the margin to 17. Covenant received late points from Wright at the line, but Belhaven closed out the 61-47 win.
