JACKSON, Miss. - Belhaven quarterback
Matthew Dial has been named the USA South Offensive Player of the Week for the first time in his career after helping the Blazers rally for a 19-10 win at Greensboro on Saturday.
The freshman from Ocala, Florida, completed 13 of 17 passes for 146 yards and two touchdowns. Belhaven trailed 10-0 after the first quarter, but Dial found
Nehemiah Philip for a 30-yard score early in the second and connected with
Wyatt Locastro from 14 yards out to put the Blazers ahead before halftime.
Dial was at his best on the go-ahead drive. Facing third-and-nine, he hit Philip for 10 yards. On third-and-10, he found
Jaylon Harris for 14 more. His touchdown pass to Locastro came on third-and-four and capped a nine-play, 45-yard possession.
He delivered one more first down when Belhaven needed to finish the game. With the Blazers protecting a nine-point lead late in the fourth quarter, Dial gained four yards on fourth-and-one, allowing Belhaven to run out the clock.
Saturday's win was Dial's second in as many career starts. He threw four touchdown passes in his first start against N.C. Wesleyan the previous week; the most by a Blazer in a first career start since 2008. Through six team games, Dial has thrown for 475 yards and seven touchdowns.
Belhaven (3-3, 2-1 USA South) hosts Southern Virginia on Saturday, Oct. 24, at noon at Belhaven Bowl Stadium for Homecoming Weekend.
