Blazers Women's Basketball Improves to 11-1 with Win Over Asbury

JACKSON, Miss. - Belhaven Women's Basketball used a decisive third-quarter surge to earn an 86-72 win Saturday at Rugg Arena. The Blazers improved to 11-1 overall and remained undefeated (4-0) in conference play.

Four Belhaven players scored in double figures, led by Savannah Hailey, who recorded her eighth double-double of the season with 24 points and 12 rebounds. Veronica Williams finished with 20 points, Katelyn Coleman added 16, and Jasi Jenkins contributed 16 off the bench to round out the four double-figure scorers. The Blazers finished with a 46-26 edge in points in the paint, scored 24 fast-break points, and forced 21 turnovers that turned into 21 points.

The Blazers set the tone early behind perimeter shooting and defensive activity. Williams knocked down back-to-back three-pointers in the opening minute to spark an 8-0 start. Coleman followed with a layup in the paint as the Blazers pushed the lead to eight before the first media timeout.

After a brief response from the visitors, Belhaven went on another run midway through the quarter. Jenkins scored inside, Coleman added a putback, and Williams capped the stretch with a corner three to make it a double-digit game. Belhaven closed the quarter on a 7-1 run and took a 24-15 lead after one.

The visitors found momentum early in the second, trimming the lead with perimeter shooting and transition baskets. Belhaven countered with interior scoring from Hailey and Coleman, but the quarter featured extended back-and-forth play.

Midway through the period, the Blazers steadied themselves behind Jenkins, who scored four straight points in the paint. Williams added a fast-break layup late, and Jenkins converted a tip-in in the final seconds as Belhaven carried a 43-39 lead into halftime after a 19-19 quarter between both sides.

Belhaven seized control coming out of the locker room. Hailey opened the half with a strong finish in the lane, then scored again in transition as the Blazers began to separate. A 12-2 run midway through the quarter included baskets from Hailey, Ny Jones, Williams, and Kiersten Hudson, pushing the lead to double digits.

Defensive pressure fueled the surge. Belhaven forced multiple turnovers and converted them into fast-break points, while Hailey dominated the glass with second-chance finishes. The Blazers outscored the visitors 30-21 in the quarter and entered the fourth with a commanding 73-60 advantage.

Belhaven maintained control in the final period. Jenkins opened the quarter with two free throws, and Hailey followed with a jumper to keep the margin comfortable. After the visitors briefly cut into the lead, Coleman scored at the line and Hailey added another basket in the paint to halt the run.

The Blazers closed the game with discipline on both ends. Jenkins finished a putback, Coleman added a late layup, and Belhaven held the visitors to 12 fourth-quarter points to seal the 14-point win.

Hailey led all scorers with 24 points and 12 rebounds. Williams finished with 20 points, Coleman added 16, and Jenkins contributed 16 off the bench to round out the four double-figure scorers.

The Blazers have almost a week off, heading to Covenant on Friday at Lookout Mountain, Ga. Tip-off is set for 3:00 PM.
