LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN, Ga. - Belhaven Women's Basketball leaned on a strong fourth-quarter finish to earn a 72-60 road win Friday afternoon at the Barnes Physical Education Center at Covenant. The Blazers improved to 12-1 overall and 5-0 in conference play with the victory.
Katelyn Coleman finished with 22 points and nine rebounds, marking her second 20-point performance of the season.
Savannah Hailey added 22 points and seven rebounds, while
Veronica Williams posted a double-double with 10 points and a career-high 10 rebounds.
The Blazers established early control with interior scoring and defensive activity. Hailey and Coleman combined for the first nine points as the Blazers opened on a 9-2 run in the first four minutes. After a brief response trimmed the margin, Belhaven answered with another push. Coleman scored twice in the paint, Williams knocked down a three-pointer, and the Blazers closed the quarter on a 7-2 run to take a 21-17 lead after one.
The second quarter featured extended stretches of back-and-forth play. Belhaven briefly pushed the lead to six after
RaMya King scored inside and Coleman converted two free throws following a turnover. The home team responded with a run that cut the lead to two midway through the period.
Belhaven steadied itself late behind Coleman, who scored on a strong finish in the lane and assisted on a transition basket. Despite the visitors trimming the margin late, the Blazers went into halftime holding a 34-30 advantage after a 13-13 quarter.
Momentum shifted several times coming out of the locker room. Hailey scored six early points to keep Belhaven in front, but a run midway through the quarter briefly gave the home team the lead. Belhaven responded with composure.
Coleman tied the game with a finish in the paint, and
Kiersten Hudson followed with a layup to regain the lead. Williams added a fast-break basket late in the quarter as Belhaven closed on a 7-3 run to carry a 50-49 lead into the fourth.
Belhaven took control in the final period with timely stops and efficient trips to the free-throw line. Coleman opened the quarter with a basket inside, and Hailey followed with another finish to spark a 6-0 run that pushed the lead to five.
After the Scots briefly answered, Belhaven delivered the decisive stretch of the game. Coleman scored six straight points at the free-throw line and on the break, while Williams added two free throws as the Blazers put together a 12-2 run to extend the lead to double digits. Belhaven shot 10-for-10 at the line in the fourth quarter and held the home team to 11 points in the period to seal the win.
The Blazers continue CCS play with a trip to Maryville tomorrow for the second leg of a back-to-back. Tip-off is set for 1:00 PM CST.
