No. 5 Blazers Split Opening Day Doubleheader at LeTourneau

LONGVIEW, Texas - The 5th-ranked Belhaven Softball team split a doubleheader against LeTourneau in Longview, Texas, on Friday, earning a hard-fought 4-3 victory in Game 1 before falling 4-3 in the nightcap.

Game 1: Belhaven 4, LeTourneau 3

In the first game, No. 5 Belhaven (1-0) mounted a late-game rally to secure a 4-3 win over LeTourneau (2-3). The Blazers took an early lead in the first inning thanks to a solo home run by Ellie Jones, but LeTourneau responded in the second inning with three runs, capitalizing on a fielding error and a two-RBI double.

Belhaven chipped away at the deficit in the fifth inning when Jordan Kanipe stole home to cut the lead to 3-2. The Blazers grabbed the lead in the sixth when Colby Hollinger delivered a clutch two-run single, scoring Anna Caime and Reagan Bryan to put Belhaven ahead 4-3.

Pitcher Macy Funderburk (1-0) delivered an impressive complete-game performance to begin her 2025 campaign, allowing six hits and three unearned runs while striking out five over seven innings.

Game 2: LeTourneau 4, Belhaven 3

The second game of the day saw Belhaven (1-1) take a late lead before LeTourneau (3-3) fought back for a 4-3 victory in the bottom of the seventh.

The hosts struck first in the opening frame, scoring on a sacrifice fly. Belhaven answered in the fourth, tying the game 1-1 on an RBI single from Sarah Stockstill. The Blazers then pushed ahead in the fifth, plating two runs after an error by LeTourneau and an RBI double from Ellie Jones.

The Yellow Jackets plated three in the final frame to overcome the deficit and earn a doubleheader split.

Belle West (0-1) pitched well in the loss, giving up just two earned runs over 6.2 innings.
