JACKSON – In a hard-fought battle at Rugg Arena, Belhaven used a dominant fourth-quarter performance to overcome Huntingdon 66-59 on Thursday afternoon.
The Blazers outscored the Hawks 22-11 in the final period, erasing a deficit and securing their 12th win of the season.
Huntingdon controlled the tempo early, jumping out to a 20-13 lead in the first quarter behind strong play from Briana McGruder, who finished with 17 points and nine rebounds. The Hawks maintained their advantage through three quarters, taking a 48-44 lead into the final frame.
However, Belhaven found its rhythm in the fourth quarter, led by a standout performance from Ally Alford on both ends of the floor. The guard poured in a game-high 23 points, including key baskets down the stretch to propel the Blazers forward. Alford also recorded a career-high 10 steals which ranks as the 3rd most in a single game in program history.
Belhaven's defense also stepped up, forcing crucial turnovers and converting them into fast-break points. Belhaven capitalized on its depth, with the bench contributing 35 points compared to Huntingdon's 17. The Blazers also dominated in transition, outscoring the Hawks 11-4 on fast-break points.
With this win, Belhaven strengthens its position in conference play with just three regular season games remaining. The Blazers sit third in the CCS and are a game away from locking up the opportunity to host a first round game.
Belhaven returns to action on Saturday when they host Asbury for Senior Day. Tipoff against the Eagles is set for 2:00 PM at Rugg Arena.
