JACKSON - Belhaven (13-9, 10-4 CCS) secured a hard-fought 76-69 victory over conference frontrunner Asbury (15-8, 12-2 CCS) on Senior Day on Saturday. The Blazers capitalized on strong interior play and clutch shooting in the fourth quarter to pull away late. The win extended Belhaven's winning streak to seven games heading into the final week of the regular season.
Belhaven jumped out to an early lead, fueled by efficient scoring in the paint and strong rebounding. The Blazers led 20-15 after the first period. The two teams traded buckets over the second quarter as the Blazers carried a narrow 34-30 lead into halftime.
Belhaven's offense continued to hit shots in the third quarter, as they shot an impressive 62.5% from the field, extending their lead to 57-48 heading into the final frame.
The Eagles made a late surge, tying the game up at 69, but Belhaven responded with key baskets, including a three-pointer by
Ally Alford and strong inside play from
Ebony Gayden to score the final seven points of the contest.
Gayden led the way with 20 points and nine rebounds, while
Savannah Hailey poured in 14 points. Alford finished with 13 points, nine assists, and three steals. Belhaven's depth proved critical, outscoring Asbury's bench 36-17.
Following the game, Alford,
Brookelynn Saxon, and
Reagan Buchanan were honored during Senior Day activities for their contributions to the Belhaven Women's Basketball program.
The Blazers will return to Rugg Arena next Friday with a pivotal league matchup against Maryville. Tipoff is set for 4:30 PM.
