JACKSON - The Belhaven Women's Basketball team outscored Piedmont 29-10 in the fourth quarter to pick a 78-63 home win over the Lions on Saturday afternoon. With the win, Belhaven moved to 9-9 overall and 6-4 in conference play.
The Lions jumped out to an early double-digit point lead as a 12-0 run gave them a 16-5 lead with three minutes left in the first quarter. Piedmont took a 22-11 advantage into the second frame.
Belhaven responded in the second as a layup from
Katelyn Coleman evened things up at 23 with 5:26 left in the half. The two teams traded buckets over the next five minutes before Piedmont capped off the first 20 minutes with four straight points to take a 33-29 lead into the halftime break.
The Lions continued to hold the lead and were able to extend it to as many as seven on a couple of occasions before
Veronica Williams buried a three-pointer to bring Belhaven back within four at 53-49 heading into the final quarter of play.
The fourth quarter proved to be all Green and Gold. Belhaven took their first lead since the first quarter on an
Ebony Gayden layup to put them up 59-58 with five minutes to go. The Blazers rode the momentum to several steals and easy buckets on the other end to extend the lead to 70-60 with just 1:44 left.Â
Belhaven held serve down the stretch by hitting free throws and getting stops as they took down the conference leaders by a final of 78-63 and win their second consecutive contest.
Gayden paced Belhaven with 21 points and 12 rebounds, while
Savannah Hailey poured in 13 points.
Ally Alford and Williams each added 12 points in the winning cause.
The Blazers hit the road on Tuesday night to take on Huntingdon in Montgomery, Alabama. Tipoff is set for 5:00 PM.
