Belhaven Men's Basketball Drops Game at Whitworth

SPOKANE, Wash. - The Belhaven Men's Basketball team wrapped up their two-game Pacific Northwest trip Monday night with a 90-76 road loss at Whitworth.

Dan Robinson continued his strong stretch of play, finishing with 27 points, marking his second 20-point outing in his last three games. Braylon Dame added 15 points, and the Blazers produced one of their stronger offensive first halves of the season, but a series of second-half scoring runs by Whitworth proved too much to overcome.

The Blazers (3-7) started fast behind perimeter shooting. Dame and Robinson drilled early threes to give the Blazers a 6-3 advantage, and a strong defensive stretch followed, with Christian McGahan, Neal Terry, and Dame generating stops that helped Belhaven push the lead to 13-5 after a Terry layup.

Whitworth countered with a steady scoring stretch at the rim, pulling within one possession before tying the game at 14-14. Belhaven responded quickly with baskets from Robinson and Charleston Wallace, then a Dame three pushed the Blazers back ahead 21-15.

Belhaven continued with consistent pressure, forcing multiple turnovers. Wallace scored in transition, Dame hit another deep three, and Robinson added a three-point play to give Belhaven a 28-25 lead.

Whitworth answered with its own momentum swing, using a series of attacks at the rim, a fast-break finish, and a three from the wing to take a 32-30 lead. Belhaven punched back with free throws from Benjamin Stewart, a driving layup from McGahan, and a Robinson jumper to regain a 36-32 advantage with under four minutes left.

The hosts closed the half with their strongest burst, piecing together a 15-9 run highlighted by transition baskets and two late threes to turn a close game into a 47-45 Pirate lead at the break.

Whitworth opened the second half with another scoring push, using offensive rebounds, a fast-break finish, and free throws to build a 51-45 lead. Belhaven briefly steadied itself with Wallace scoring twice in transition to keep the margin within single digits.

Momentum shifted again when Whitworth produced its most decisive run of the night. Over a four-minute span, the hosts strung together a 12-3 stretch fueled by second-chance baskets and paint touches, extending the lead to 60-49.

Robinson halted the run with a midrange jumper and later added a transition finish, while Dame trimmed the deficit to 63-59 at the 13-minute mark after a set of free throws. That sequence highlighted Belhaven's best window of the half, a stretch where the Blazers forced turnovers and generated trips to the line, briefly pulling the game back into reach.

But Whitworth responded immediately with a three from the wing, an inside basket, and another transition finish to ignite an 11-4 run that put the Blazers behind 74-63 with just over nine minutes remaining.

Belhaven made one last push when DJ Jones connected on a corner three and Robinson scored four straight free throws to cut it to 84-73 with just over three minutes left. The Blazers forced a turnover on the next possession but could not convert, and Whitworth sealed the outcome with late free throws and a fast-break layup inside the final minute.

The Blazers have a few days off before heading to Kentucky on Saturday afternoon to begin conference play at Asbury. Tip-off is set for 3:00 PM.
