WALLA WALLA, Wash. - The Belhaven Men's Basketball team turned in one of their most complete performances of the young season Saturday evening, defeating Whitman 92-73 inside the Sherwood Center to halt a six-game losing streak.
The Blazers shot over 43 percent from the field, forced 29 turnovers, and rode a career-high 29 points from
Benjamin Stewart to secure their first win since November 12th.
The victory also featured four players scoring in double figures and a dominant second half in which Belhaven outscored Whitman 49-30.
First Half
Belhaven (3-6) set the tone immediately. Stewart knocked down the night's first jumper, and
Christian McGahan finished inside moments later as the teams traded early baskets. Each side answered shot-for-shot through the opening minutes, with
Braylon Dame tying the game at 7-7 on a catch-and-shoot three assisted by
Dan Robinson.
The Blazers' first scoring burst came when Stewart drilled a wing three, Robinson converted at the rim, and the defense forced multiple turnovers to push Belhaven ahead 12-8. Whitman countered with a small run of its own, scoring twice off turnovers to reclaim a 13-12 edge.
Belhaven responded with a tip-in from
Charleston Wallace, a clutch three from Stewart, and a transition three from
DJ Jones-set up by
Kaleb King's steal, swinging momentum back to the Blazers and built a 24-22 lead. Stewart and
Zion Owens added free throws, and solid defensive rebounding kept Whitman from finding rhythm.
Whitman briefly surged ahead 31-26 during a stretch fueled by drives and turnovers, but the Blazers closed the half with poise.
Dan Robinson tied the game 43-43 at the buzzer with a clutch three from about 30-feet beyond the arc.
The Blazers entered halftime even, having matched Whitman's offensive pace while forcing 14 first-half turnovers.
Second Half
Belhaven wasted no time taking control after the break. Dame opened the half with a three from the right side, and McGahan finished a fast-break layup moments later for a 48-43 lead.
Then the Blazers exploded.
Robinson hit four consecutive free throws to extend the lead to 51-43, followed by a pull-up jumper that capped a 10-0 run. Stewart added two more free throws and, minutes later, drilled back-to-back threes from opposite wings as Belhaven pushed the margin to 67-47, its largest lead of the night.
During that span, the Blazers outscored Whitman 24-4, led by aggressive defense (six turnovers forced), strong rebounding, and decisive transition play.
Jones provided a spark with a tip-in, Dame scored on a run-out, and Robinson nailed a deep three to stretch the lead to 77-56. Moments later, Robinson picked off a pass and fed
Kam Beverly for a fast-break dunk that electrified the Belhaven bench.
Stewart continued his career performance with a pair of free throws and a mid-range jumper to reach 29 points before checking out to applause from teammates. Belhaven maintained full control in the closing minutes as
Ryan Tillman,
Avery Richards,
Justice Smith, and others closed out the final possessions.
Owens added a late transition layup to seal the 92-73 win.
The Blazers continue their west coast road trip with a game at No. 25 Whitworth (Spokane, Wash.) on Monday. Tip-off is set for 4:00 PM CT.
