JACKSON - Expectations for the men's basketball program are as high as they've ever been coming off of last year's Collegiate Conference of the South (CCS) Semifinal appearance. But the faces won't be the same.

Former head coach Josh Brooks, who compiled a 54-25 record in the last three seasons at the helm of the Blazers, headed to Mississippi College to take over the Choctaws program in the offseason. First Team All-Conference selections Jordan Marshall, Jacob Reese and Jonathan Lucas graduated, while Second Team All-Conference selections Jermario Hersey graduated and DeMacus Powe joined Coach Brooks at Mississippi College.

After spending seven seasons as the head coach at NCAA Division II Purdue Northwest, Boomer Roberts takes over as the head coach for the Blazers. Roberts' high-paced style of play has allowed for many players he's coached to set many program single-season records offensively, including field goals made, three-pointers made, total points and assists.

Joining him is assistant coach Jonathan Comer, one of the most accomplished high school coaches in Mississippi in a short period of time. Comer led Caledonia High School to consecutive 20-win seasons and won 70% of his games in five years coaching at the high school level.

Preseason Outlook

The Blazers will open the season against East Texas Baptist at Rugg Arena this Saturday at 6:00 PM. Following the team's season-opener, the team will host Southeastern Baptist on Wednesday, Nov. 12, before hitting the road for 10 of their next 12 games heading into the new year.

With just five returners and a new coaching staff, the Blazers were picked sixth in the CCS Preseason Poll released earlier this week. Defending conference champions Maryville were ranked first, while Asbury and Piedmont rounded out the top three. Huntingdon and Covenant are both ranked above the Blazers, while LaGrange is the only program ranked below Belhaven.

Key Newcomers

The new-look Blazers will include transfers Dan Robinson (Wabash Valley CC), Kam Beverly (Holmes CC), CJ Minton (Delta State), Benji Stewart (Mississippi College), Avery Richards (Meridian CC) and DJ Jones (Enterprise CC). True freshman Braylon Dame will add scoring from beyond-the-arc.

Robinson, a junior guard (Milwaukee, Wisc.) started in 47 games for Wabash Valley CC in two seasons, earning GRAC All-Conference honors in 2024.

Beverly, a junior forward (Jackson, Miss.), played in 35 games across two seasons at Pearl River CC and Holmes CC. He was named 2023 MAIS Defensive Player of the Year at Jackson Academy under head coach Jesse Taylor.

Minton, a junior guard (Indianola, Miss.) played in 56 games for Itawamba CC, averaging 6.0 points per game, before transferring to Delta State last season.

Stewart, a senior guard (Madison Ala.), played in 11 games for the Choctaws last season and averaged 6.8 points per game the previous season at Calhoun CC.

Richards, a senior forward (Jackson, Miss.) played in 15 games at East Central CC and Meridian CC in two seasons at the junior college level.

Jones, a junior guard (Youngsville, La.) played in 51 games over two seasons for Enterprise, averaging 9.3 points per game in that span.

Dame, a freshman guard (Moulton (Ala.) was named 5A Second Team All State last season, where he averaged 23 points per game at Lawrence County High School under head coach Jeff Hodge Jr.

Rugged Returners

Neal Terry (Olive Branch, Miss.) and Kaleb King (Olive Branch, Miss.) are among the top returners for the Blazers this season. Terry, the Belhaven all-time blocks leader returns as a paint presence for the squad. King looks to build off a freshman campaign that saw him play in three games.
