Belhaven Splits Weekend Doubleheader at Rugg Arena

JACKSON, Miss. - The Belhaven Women's Volleyball team returned home for a doubleheader at Charles R. Rugg Arena over the weekend, taking on conference opponents Asbury and Agnes Scott in a pair of pivotal CCS matches. The Blazers dropped the opener in straight sets before bouncing back with a dominant sweep in the nightcap to close the day with a split.

MATCH 1: Asbury 3, Belhaven 0
(19-25-19, 15-25, 20-25)

Belhaven opened the afternoon with a competitive effort against one of the top teams in the CCS, but ultimately fell in three sets. The first set remained tight midway through, featuring several tie scores before the visitors used a late run to pull away 25-19. The second frame followed a similar pattern, as Belhaven struggled to sustain offensive rhythm against a strong defensive block, dropping the set 25-15. In the third, the Blazers fought back to trade leads early, but a late surge from the visitors closed out the match 25-20.

Offensively, Belhaven finished with 21 kills but hit just -.022 as a team. The attack was led by balanced contributions across multiple hitters, with several Blazers tallying at least two kills. Kylarr Martin and Rylee White led the attack with five kills each, while Tarryn Woodall added three kills on a .250 hitting clip. Miriam Ateca paced the setting effort with 5 assists and chipped in a service ace, while Madison Butler added a team-high seven assists off the bench. From the service line, Butler led with four aces, and Ateca contributed one. Defensively, Kayla Robinson recorded a team-high nine digs, followed by Megan LaCour with seven.

MATCH 2: Belhaven 3, Agnes Scott 0
(25-9, 25-18, 25-12)

The Blazers responded in emphatic fashion in the second match, rolling to a 3-0 sweep in front of the home crowd. Belhaven seized control early in the opening set with a dominant 25-9 performance, hitting .219 and using a balanced offense that kept the Scotties on their heels. The second set featured the team's most efficient stretch of the day, as the Blazers hit .357 with 15 kills to take a 2-0 lead. They closed the match in convincing fashion in the third, cruising to a 25-12 win.

Belhaven's offense was firing on all cylinders in the nightcap, recording 34 kills on a .197 hitting percentage. The Blazers were particularly strong from the service line, tallying 16 aces, and the defensive unit collected 35 digs while holding the visitors to a negative attack percentage. Tarryn Woodall led the attack with seven kills on a .214 hitting percentage, while Rylee White added five kills on an impressive .833 hitting clip (5-0-6). Maggie Joy Tomlin added six kills, and McKenna Matthews chipped in five more to give Belhaven a balanced attack. Miriam Ateca directed the offense with 17 assists and added four service aces. Kayla Robinson had an excellent all-around match, contributing 5 aces, 12 digs, and a kill, while Madison Butler tallied 8 assists and 2 aces off the bench. Defensively, Robinson's 12 digs led the team, and Rylee White and Mickeyla Sitsler each added blocks at the net to help hold the visitors to a -.088 hitting percentage.

With the split, Belhaven moves to 7-11 overall and 2-3 in CCS play on the season. The Blazers will continue their conference slate next week with an away match at Huntingdon on Tuesday at 6:30 PM.
