VESTAVIA HILLS, Ala. - The Belhaven Women's Soccer team saw their eight-match unbeaten streak come to an end on Tuesday afternoon, falling 2-0 to Sewanee at the Sicard Hollow Athletic Complex.
The Blazers (10-4-3, 5-1-1 CCS) entered the non-conference matchup on a strong run but were unable to find their offensive rhythm in a defensive battle that featured limited scoring opportunities. Sewanee struck twice in the opening half and held off Belhaven's late push to hand the Blazers their first setback since September.
The home side broke through in the 33rd minute off a cross into the box that was redirected past the Blazer defense for the game's first goal. A second tally followed just before halftime in the 43rd minute, giving Belhaven a two-goal deficit at the break.
Belhaven tightened defensively in the second half, limiting Sewanee to just six shots after intermission.
Addi Roberts was strong in goal, recording four saves over 90 minutes while facing 14 total shots.
On the attacking end,
Kinsey Carter provided Belhaven's best scoring chance with a shot on target late in the second half, while
Mia Kate Cade also registered an attempt that sailed just high. Despite generating more possession and earning a corner kick opportunity after halftime, the Blazers were unable to convert.
Belhaven finished with two total shots and one on goal, while Sewanee held a 14-2 advantage in attempts and 6-1 edge in corner kicks.
The Blazers will look to regroup as they return to conference play later this week. The Blazers take on Agnes Scott on Friday. Kickoff is set for 1:00 PM.
