Blazers Overcome 14-Point Deficit to Top N.C. Wesleyan, 41-38

ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. - Belhaven quarterback Brock Morris delivered one of the top passing performances in program history as the Blazers stormed back from a 14-point second-half deficit to defeat N.C. Wesleyan, 41-38, on Saturday afternoon at Vernon T. Bradley Stadium.

Morris threw for 448 yards and three touchdowns, the most by a Belhaven quarterback since Hunter McEachern's 501-yard effort against Louisiana Christian on October 28, 2017. His precision, poise and patience fueled a 17-point fourth quarter as the Blazers improved to 3-2 overall and 2-0 in the USA South.

Belhaven set the tone early with a balanced attack that produced three first-half touchdowns and a field goal before storming back in the fourth quarter.

The Blazers wasted no time finding the end zone, driving 50 yards in just three plays on their opening possession. Caleb Gallashaw capped the drive with a 12-yard touchdown run, his first of two on the afternoon, to give Belhaven a 7-0 lead just 1:40 into the game. After the hosts responded with a long run to tie the score, TJ Hatch answered immediately, hauling in a 74-yard touchdown pass from Morris to put Belhaven back in front 14-7 midway through the first quarter.

The first period ended with the Blazers leading 14-10, but Gallashaw extended the margin early in the second quarter with a one-yard plunge to finish off a five-play, 37-yard drive. His score made it 21-10 before N.C. Wesleyan countered with back-to-back touchdowns, including a 95-yard drive just before halftime that sent the Blazers into the locker room trailing 24-21.

The hosts struck quickly again to open the third quarter, connecting on a 57-yard touchdown to stretch the lead to 31-21. Belhaven responded with a 14-play, 86-yard drive that chewed over seven minutes off the clock and ended in a 20-yard field goal by Lyndell Boatman, trimming the deficit to 31-24 late in the third.

Through three quarters, Morris had already surpassed 300 yards passing, with Hatch, Craft, and Wyatt Locastro all contributing key receptions to keep drives alive. The Blazers entered the final quarter down by just seven points, setting the stage for their late comeback heroics.

After trailing 38-24 in the fourth quarter, the Blazers mounted back-to-back scoring drives capped by Craft's touchdowns to pull even. Following a defensive stop, Morris guided Belhaven 75 yards in the final 90 seconds to set up Boatman's game-winning 18-yard field goal with 26 seconds left. Boatman also connected from 20 yards earlier in the contest and went a perfect 5-for-5 on extra points.

Belhaven's offense amassed 553 total yards, including 448 through the air and 105 on the ground. Morris completed 24-of-34 passes without an interception, connecting with six different receivers.

Hatch and Craft both turned in career-best performances to headline the receiving corps. Hatch totaled 157 yards and one touchdown on five catches, highlighted by his first-quarter 74-yard strike. His 157 yards are the most by a Belhaven receiver since Quan Jones posted 210 against Southwestern on October 14, 2017.

Craft added eight receptions for 98 yards and two touchdowns, including a pair of clutch scores in the fourth quarter-one from 28 yards out and another from two yards to tie the game at 38-38 with just over two minutes remaining.

This season marks the first time since 2014 that multiple Blazer receivers have eclipsed 150 receiving yards in a single campaign, following RJ Garrison's 155-yard effort against Millsaps earlier this year.

Gallashaw anchored the rushing attack with 86 yards and two touchdowns, marking his second two-touchdown performance of the season. His early scoring runs helped the Blazers establish momentum before N.C. Wesleyan's second-quarter surge.

Dee Gray intercepted a pass in the first quarter and added a pass breakup, while Wyatt Beck led the team with eight total tackles. Belhaven finished with 65 total tackles, including four for loss, and won the time-of-possession battle by nearly six minutes.

Belhaven returns home next Saturday for a USA South Conference matchup against Greensboro College. Kickoff at The Bowl is set for 12:00 p.m.
