LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN, Ga. - The Belhaven Women's Basketball team picked up an impressive conference win on the road Thursday night as they took down Covenant by double digits in a 67-57 victory.
The Blazers got off to a quick start against Covenant and were in full control for the majority of the 40-minute contest. Belhaven scored the opening six points of the game in what was a strong first quarter on both ends of the floor for the Blazers. Belhaven's defensive pressure created early transition opportunities for the Blazers who led 22-10 at the break.
Belhaven extended their lead in the second quarter as their strong defensive effort continued limiting the Scots to just 13 points in the frame and 23 in the entirety of the first half. Belhaven took a 15-point lead into the half but would see Covenant cut that lead down to just seven with a strong third quarter.
Despite a strong second half fight from the hosts, Belhaven held steady, never letting Covenant within two possessions in the fourth quarter and pulling away late for a crucial conference win.
Belhaven was led offensively on the night by
Ally Alford who had an all-around strong performance with 14 points, six steals, five rebounds and four assists.
Ebony Gayden continued her consistency offensively and in the rebounding game with 13 points and eight boards.
Katelyn Coleman also finished in double-figures on the night with 11 points and five steals as she worked her way into the starting lineup.
Belhaven's defensive effort was a difference maker on Thursday as they came away with 17 steals and saw the hosts commit 28 turnovers in the win. The win sees the Blazers move to 7-6 on the season and 4-1 in CCS play. Next up for the Blazers is a trip within the state of Georgia to Demorest as they take on Piedmont.
