COLUMBUS, Miss. - The Belhaven Volleyball team returns to action on Saturday as they prepare for an in-state battle against the Mississippi University for Women in Columbus. Coming off a straight sets win against Principia last weekend, the Blazers are looking to carry momentum as their early season slate rolls on.
The Blazers (1-2) opened up their 2024 campaign at the Rhodes College Invitational in Memphis last weekend where they took on the hosts, Rhodes, as well as Lyon College and Principia. After falling in the first two matches, the Blazers bounced back for a resounding victory over Principia which marked the first win of the season as well as the first win under new Head Coach
Olivia Killelea.
Now the Blazers will face MUW (1-1), a team over which the Blazers have been dominant in recent history. Since 2019, the Blazers are 9-0 against the Owls with a perfect 4-0 record in MUW's home gym. Last season the Blazers took both ends of a home and home against the Owls including a 3-2 victory on the road.
So far this season, Belhaven's attack is led by sophomore
Megan LaCour, who has a team-high 16 kills, as well as sophomore
Aniyah Tompkins who leads the team with 39 assists. Five different Blazers posted double-digit digs at the Rhodes Invitational with 18 from
Kayla Robinson the high mark.
For the Owls, MC Brown leads the team with 37 kills while Madison Wood has racked up 67 assists. Bailee Schmitt leads MUW with 39 digs through their first two matches.
The Blazers and Owls are set to start at 1:00 PM in Columbus.
