JACKSON - The Belhaven Volleyball team picked up a straight sets victory over LaGrange College on Saturday to open their Collegiate Conference of the South slate 1-0.
The Blazers and Panthers saw each set go down to the wire with the back-and-forth starting in the opening set. Down 18-15 in the first set, the Blazers went on a crucial five-point run to take a 20-18 which propelled them to the opening set win.
Belhaven then handled the Panthers more comfortably in the second set, once against going on a five-point run in a similar situation to pull ahead and away from LaGrange. The Panthers took control early in the third set looking to extend the match but the momentum swing for Belhaven once again catapulted them in front and eventually to the match win.
Megan LaCour led the Blazers' attack on the day with 12 kills including crucial ones in those late set runs.
Aniyah Tompkins and
Miriam Ateca combined to provide 35 assists on the day for Belhaven while Ateca also tallied 16 digs in a double-double performance.
Belhaven has won back-to-back matches at home in straight set fashion as they look to build momentum in the thick of the season. The Blazers will head out on the road next as they travel to Texas to take on LeTourneau University.
