Box Score MEMPHIS - The Belhaven Volleyball team came up short in their first match of the season on Friday against Rhodes College in Memphis, Tennessee.
The Blazers were opening up a weekend at the Rhodes Invitational where they are set for three matches against three different opponents. Despite a couple of close sets, the Blazers fell to the tournament hosts 3-0 on the evening.
The Blazers took an early lead in the opening set and were within a few points at the midway point of the set, but were just short and dropped the set 25-20. After the close opening set, Rhodes was able to secure a 2-0 set lead with a 25-8 victory in the second.
Despite being down a pair of sets, the Blazers battled well against a strong Rhodes team in the third, and eventual final set. A couple of late kills from
Megan LaCour and
Emma Gardner kept the Blazers even with the hosts late in the final set, but down 22-21, Rhodes went on a quick run to end the match.
Megan LaCour finished the match as the Blazers' kill leader with six while
Rylee White picked up four kills. LaCour also topped the team with nine digs, followed closely by
Kayla Robinson who recorded six.
Belhaven will have a quick opportunity to bounce back as they open Day Two at the Rhodes Invitational against Lyon College at 11:00 AM. They'll then close their trip to Memphis against Principia at 3:00 PM.
