MONTGOMERY, Ala. - The No. 6 Belhaven Softball team dropped a 6-5 decision to Maryville in Saturday's Collegiate Conference of the South Championship Game.
Just two days after a 13-inning marathon on Thursday, the Blazers and Scots matched up once again, this time with a CCS title on the line. Maryville, the designated away team, got the scoring started in the top of the first. Belhaven responded in their half of the opening inning as
Ellie Jones continued her strong weekend at the plate with a two-out RBI single to left to score
Allie Gordon.
The game stayed deadlocked at one apiece until the fifth when the Scots pushed five across to take a 6-1 lead into the sixth. The Blazers began to claw back in the bottom of the sixth as
Katie Jo Richardson drove in
Ellie Jones with an RBI double down the left-field line.
Two batters later,
Anna Caime launched a no-doubter over the scoreboard in left to cut the deficit to 6-4 heading into the final frame. After a scoreless inning in the circle from
Macy Funderburk,
Allie Gordon opened the bottom of the seventh in style with her 12th home run of the season to bring the Blazers within a run.
Following the homer, three consecutive flyouts brought an end to a strong comeback bid by Belhaven.
Kennedy Carruth,
Ellie Jones,
Anna Caime, and
Natalie Parker were each selected to the All-Tournament Team for their performances on the weekend.
The Blazers now hold a 37-6 overall record as they gear up for a fourth straight NCAA Tournament appearance.
