PEARL, Miss. - The Belhaven Baseball team utilized nine different pitchers to shutout Millsaps, 4-0, in Game 1 of the Cowboy Maloney Series on Wednesday night. The Blazers' pitching staff allowed just three Major hits on the night.
Millsaps loaded the bases against Belhaven starter
Caleb Menard in the opening frame, but the Blazers' righthander induced a flyout to center to keep the Majors off of the board.
With the game scoreless in the home half of the third, a single by
Hunter Harrell and two free passes loaded the bases with one out for
Tristan Pearson. The Blazers' first baseman drew the third consecutive walk to put the first run on the board.
Owen Abney walked two batters later to force home another run to give Belhaven a 2-0 lead. The margin stayed at two into the latter innings as each new Belhaven pitcher found success in keeping Millsaps scoreless.
A pinch-hit single from
Connor McHenry and a two-out walk to
Eli Britt put runners on the corners for Harrell in the bottom of the eighth. After delivering a perfect frame on the mound, Harrell came through with the biggest knock of the game, a two-run double to center to give Belhaven a 4-0 advantage.
Looking to close things out,
Kade May took the mound in the ninth and induced a 4-6-3 double play to seal an impressive 4-0 win for the Blazers. Belhaven now sits one game up in the series with two games remaining at Millsaps.
