BEREA, Ky. - The Belhaven Women's Basketball Team advanced to the CCS Championship Game in come-from-behind fashion, taking down No. 2 LaGrange by a final score of 80-74.
The Blazers and Panthers began to trade punches in the opening quarter with no team seeming to grab the upper hand.
Ebony Gayden helped give the Blazers a 14-10 lead as the senior forward converted on a jumper at the 4:16 mark. Both teams continued to go back and forth, with the Panthers up 19-17 after quarter one. The Panthers got off to a quick start in the second quarter and extended their lead to as much as 11. Belhaven managed to cut the lead to single digits before halftime and found themselves down 39-30.
The Panthers offense showed no signs of stopping as they put together a run to extend their lead to 14 early in the third.
Kourtne Lee became electric for Belhaven as she managed to score six of her 16 points in the third quarter to lead a comeback effort that would bring Belhaven to within five. The effort did not subside when the fourth quarter rolled around as players like
Ebony Gayden and
Xhiir Burgess exerted their dominance as the duo combined for 19 of Belhaven's 28 fourth-quarter points. Belhaven controlled the game until the time expired, grabbing an 80-74 victory.
The Blazers comeback effort was led by
Xhiir Burgess who finished with 27 points on 85% shooting from the floor and 11 rebounds.
Ebony Gayden contributed to the cause with a dominating 22-point, 12-rebound game.
Kourtne Lee stepped up for the Blazers, scoring a season-high 19 points and grabbing four rebounds.
The Blazers will look to bring home the CCS Championship as they face top-seeded Berea in what will be a exciting matchup. Tipoff will begin at 2:00 PM.
