Blazers Grab Comeback Win Over Covenant, Advance to CCS Semifinals

JACKSON, Miss. - The Belhaven Men's Basketball team knocked off Covenant, 73-72, in a comeback thriller on Tuesday to advance to the CCS Tournament Semi-Final Round on Friday.

The Blazers got off to a sluggish start against the Scots, who were the 7th seed in the tournament and looking to play spoiler to Belhaven's championship hopes. Covenant jumped out to an early lead over the Blazers, scoring the first 12 points of the contest.

While the Blazers got on the board, the Scots continued to dominate on both ends of the floor and led 22-8 at the under-12 media timeout of the first half. Belhaven worked their way back into the game and got within five thanks to a 9-0 run out of the break, but Covenant pushed the lead back to double digits and led 41-29 going into the half.

Coming out for the second half, Covenant was able to hold Belhaven off until a sequence with 10:59 to go in the game where Covenant was hit with three straight technical fouls. Down seven, Jordan Marshall hit four of six straight free throws and then drilled a three to level the score with under 11 minutes to play.

The two teams traded the lead over the remainder of the contest with Belhaven taking a 73-69 lead with less than two minutes to go. Covenant hit a late three to take it to a one-point game but couldn't convert on their final possession, sending Belhaven to the CCS Tournament Semifinals.

The Blazers were led on the night by Judah Jordan who tallied 18 points, three rebounds and two steals. Jordan Marshall picked up a crucial 13 points while Jacob Reese tallied his 14th double-double of the season with 14 points and 10 rebounds.

Belhaven will now head to Maryville, Tennessee to take on 3rd-seeded Piedmont in the CCS Semifinal Round. The game against the Lions is set for Friday at 4:00 PM with the winner earning a berth to the CCS Title game against either LaGrange or Maryville.
