SPOKANE, Wash. - The Belhaven Men's Basketball team fell in a heartbreaker on Friday night as they dropped a 66-64 road decision at No. 20 Whitworth in a battle that came down to the last possession.
The Blazers battled Whitworth from the opening tip, exchanging early blows with the No. 20 Pirates. The hosts though would open a double-digit advantage near the midway point of the first half, threatening to open up the game fiurther before the break.
Belhaven closed the gap though, with defensive stops being the Blazers' competitve catalyst and seeing the gap narrowed to 36-27 heading into the break. In the second half, the Blazers were the aggressors with solid shot-making and a full-court defensive pressure that saw the nine-point deficit erased in the first six and a half minutes of the frame.
The Blazers took their first lead of the contest on a three-pointer from
Jordan Marshall with just over 10 minutes to play, setting up a thrilling finish. Belhaven's lead would grow to five as the half wore on but in the final minutes, free throw opportunities for the hosts made the difference.
With Whitworth back on top with 12 seconds to play, Belhaven got a good look for a potential game-winning three that came up just short.
On the night,
DeMarcus Powe led the Blazers with 15 points on 5-5 shooting from beyond the arc.
Jacob Reese grabbed another double-double for the year with 11 points and 13 rebounds which was a game-high for both teams.
Jordan Williams finished with 11 points to round out the Blazers in double-figures.Â
The Blazers will look to rebound on December 11th when they travel to Marshall, Texas for another tough road test, this time against East Texas Baptist.
