JACKSON - The Belhaven Men's Basketball team opened up the 2024-25 season in style on Tuesday night, scoring 52 second-half points en route to an 87-65 win over MUW.
Early threes from
Jermario Hersey and
Jonathan Lucas had the Blazers out to a 10-5 lead at the 15:25 mark. After the Owls drew within a basket at 19-17, Belhaven went on a 12-4 run over the next five minutes to take a double-digit lead with just three minutes left in the half.
DeMarcus Powe's layup with half a minute remaining gave the Blazers a 35-28 lead after the opening 20 minutes of play. MUW outscored Belhaven in the first five minutes of the second to cut the lead back to three at 42-39, but it was all Green and Gold from that point on.
The Blazers went on a 20-4 run that was highlighted by and-one three pointers on consecutive possessions from
Jordan Williams to push the lead out to 65-45 with 7:30 remaining. The margin got to as many as 26 on several occasions as Belhaven cruised over the final minutes to earn the 87-65 victory to open the new season in the win column.
Williams led the Blazers with 15 points in his Belhaven debut on 3-of-6 from three-point range.
Jordan Marshall and
Dyllion Redmond each added 11 points, while
Jacob Reese finished with nine points and 16 boards.
Belhaven returns to action this Friday, November 15th when they open up the Rhodes Classic with the host Lynx at 7:00 PM.
