JACKSON, Miss. - The Belhaven Men's Soccer team fell in a tough conference clash against Asbury on Saturday 2-1, in a match that saw all three goals scored in a 15 minute span early in the second half.
The first half played out as one would expect with a first time matchup against new conference foes following Asbury's joining of the Collegiate Conference of the South ahead of this season. Both teams were energetic but cautious with unfamiliar opposition and the opening half ended with just one total shot on goal between the two clubs.
The match would open up in the second half when the Eagles were awarded a penalty following a whistle for handball from the match referee. Asbury converted in the 50th minute to take the lead and spark the match into action.
Belhaven answered in the 56th minute when a ricocheted free kick fell to
Igor Rudolph in the box and the Blazers' captain took a controlled touch to set up a shot which he drilled inside the near post for the equalizer. The Blazers' pulling the match level was short-lived though as Asbury retook the lead in the 61st minute and would hold on under tough pressure from the Blazers for the final half hour to pick up the win.
Belhaven will return to action on Tuesday as they head to Columbus, Mississippi for a non-conference tilt with MUW.
