JACKSON - The Belhaven Men's Soccer team picked up a come-from-behind, 3-1 victory over Millsaps on Wednesday in the 2024 edition of the Riverside Derby.
Millsaps took an early lead in the match as they opened the scoring in the 6th minute and had the Blazers on the back foot. The Blazers got a big answer though in the 33rd minute as
Adrian Sanchez opened up space in the box and fired a left-footed finish into the bottom corner.
Sanchez's goal had the score level at the break and with Belhaven in the ascendancy. Early in the second half, Belhaven took the lead with a goal from forward
Courtland Williams that wrong-footed the goalkeeper and deflected in at the near-post. Up 2-1, the Blazers withstood the counter from Millsaps with goalkeeper
Danny Bahena making a couple of top saves to keep Belhaven in front.
Williams' 52nd minute goal would prove to be the match-winner but
Ciaran Colvin would add a Belhaven third for good measure in the 79th minute as he headed home a well-delivered corner from
Koby Rhone.
With the win, Belhaven improves to 9-3-4 on the season and have now equaled their win total from a season ago. The Blazers have also continued their run of dominance against the Majors that has seen Belhaven win each of the last three meetings and go unbeaten against the Majors since 2016.
Belhaven returns to action on Saturday as they host LaGrange in the Blazers' regular season finale. A win against the Panthers would secure the No. 2 seed in the Collegiate Conference of the South tournament which is set to begin next weekend.
