JACKSON, Miss.- The Belhaven Women's Basketball Team pulled together an impressive victory against the Maryville Scots 68-62.
In quarter one, both teams started hot out the gate offensively, trading early baskets. As the quarter moved along the score still remained close and at the end of the quarter, the Blazers and Scots were deadlocked at 18 apiece.
In the second quarter, both squads continued to go back and forth. Maryville made a late charge for the lead and took a 35-33 advantage into the half.
Ebony Gayden led the way for Belhaven in first half with 11 points as
Xhiir Burgess followed behind with 10 points.
At the start of the second half, the Blazers started out hot and managed to jump ahead after a
Xhiir Burgess layup gave them a 44-38 lead. The Blazers managed to hold on to their lead despite the Scots being right on their heels and would head into the fourth leading 50-49. The fourth quarter once again began with both teams keeping it close.
Kourtne Lee helped break down the door for the Blazers as she hit back to back jumpers to give Belhaven a 61-58 lead. Belhaven would go on to seal the game with late free throws and take down the Scots for a major conference win 68-62.
The Blazers were very efficient from the field, shooting 44.4% as a team and converted from the free throw line when it mattered going 20-28 on 71.4%.
Ebony Gayden finished with her second double double of the season with 20 points and 10 rebounds.
Xhiir Burgess was stellar for Belhaven as she finished with 16 points, seven rebounds, and four assists.
Kourtne Lee was at the helm of the Blazers offense as she scored 11 points and dished out six assists.
Belhaven looks to continue their hot start in conference play as they face Agnes Scott on Tuesday, January 9. Tip off is set for 5:00 PM.
