MONTGOMERY, Ala. - The Belhaven Women's Basketball team overcame an eight-point second-half deficit to pick up a key road conference win over the Huntingdon Hawks, 65-57, in Montgomery on Tuesday night. The Blazers are now 6-14 (5-7 CCS) with four regular-season games remaining.
A back-and-forth first quarter ended with the Hawks on top by a score of 15-12. The hosts used a run late in the half to grab a six-point advantage at 27-21 going into the break. The Hawks were able to extend the lead to eight midway through the third.
Back-to-back buckets from
Ashanti Lipscomb and
Xhiir Burgess cut the lead to 32-29 with 5:47 left in the quarter. The Blazers flipped the script by going on a 15-5 run over the final four minutes of the third to turn an eight-point deficit into a seven-point lead heading into the final frame.
Two free throws from Burgess put Belhaven in front by nine early in the fourth, but Huntingdon cut the lead to just one with 6:43 to go. Once again, Burgess answered the call for the Blazers as she made two baskets to stretch the lead out to five late.
The Blazers' defense stood tall in the final minutes, holding the Hawks to just one made field goal over the last four minutes.
Kourtne Lee and Burgess were a perfect 8-for-8 from the charity stripe down the stretch to seal a hard-fought 65-57 win on the road.
Burgess led Belhaven with 24 points and 11 rebounds, her third double-double of the season. Lipscomb added nine points while
Hayle Poindexter and
Kourtne Lee chipped in eight apiece.
The Blazers return to Rugg Arena Saturday, February 3rd to host the Covenant Scots. Tipoff is slated for 2:00 PM.
