JACKSON, Miss. - The Belhaven Women's Basketball Team fell just short against the Piedmont Lions 81-63 on Saturday as they played the second day of a back-to-back.
Belhaven got off to a slow start in the opening minutes as the Lions came out the gate swinging with a 9-0 run. The Lions played a fast-pace offense that the Blazers struggled to keep up with and Belhaven found themselves trailing 23-15 at the end of the first quarter.
The Blazers paved their way back into the game at the 6:54 mark in the second quarter as an
Ashanti Lipscomb three cut the deficit to five. Belhaven kept the Lions' lead within double digits and trailed 38-31 at the half.
Belhaven managed to start off the third quarter on track as they hung with the Lions and cut the lead to six. The Lions would regain control through a 17-4 scoring run. The Blazers fought hard as the fourth quarter began and made several dents at the lead, eventually cutting it to 11 points but tired legs from a conference back-to-back eventually won out and Piedmont pulled away late.
Belhaven struggled from the field shooting 32.4% on the night.
Ebony Gayden had a strong day for the Blazers with 20 points and seven rebounds while
Kourtne Lee and
Hayle Poindexter each chipped in 10 points. The Blazers now sit at sixth in the conference while Piedmont remains in fourth.
The Blazers will be back on the road as they look for a season sweep against Huntingdon on Tuesday January 30th. Tip off is set for 5:30 PM against the Hawks in Montgomery.
