JACKSON, Miss.- The Belhaven Women's Basketball team picked up a major conference win against Huntingdon on Friday night as they took down the Hawks in blowout fashion, 69-48.
Early on, the Blazers took control of the game as
Kourtne Lee scored the first seven points for Belhaven. The Blazers showcased their dominance the rest of the quarter as
Reagan Buchanan converted on a tough and-1 basket to give Belhaven a 22-9 lead after the first quarter.
Belhaven held their lead as the game rolled into the second quarter moved but the Hawks were able to cut the Blazers advantage back inside single digits. The Blazers entered into the halftime break with a 31-22 lead and showcased a suffocating defense holding the Hawks to just 17.9% shooting from the field.
As the third quarter began,
Ashanti Lipscomb drilled a three to give the Blazers a 34-22 lead. The Blazers would go on to dominate on both sides of the ball for the remaining quarter and stretched their lead back out to double figures.
Belhaven began to pull away midway through the final quarter as their stifling defense continued to give the Hawks trouble. The Blazers closed out the game on a 12-2 run to pick up a much needed victory to get back in the win column and stay in the thick of the Collegiate Conference of the South picture.
The Blazers played their best brand of defense so far this season as they held Huntingdon to just 23.6% shooting overall on the night and forced 17 turnovers.
Xhiir Burgess and
Ashanti Lipscomb were the Blazers one-two punch as Burgess finished with 19 points and eight rebounds while Lipscomb poured in 14 more.
Ebony Gayden grabbed another double-double on the year with 12 points and 12 rebounds.
Belhaven will be back at it on Saturday, January 27th as they look to force a season split against Piedmont. The Blazers and Lions will tip off at 2:00 PM at Rugg Arena.
