LaGRANGE, GA.- The Belhaven Women's Basketball team dropped a close contest to the LaGrange Panthers, 64-56, on Wednedsay.
The Blazers got off to a strong start in the opening quarter after a
Kourtne Lee floater gave them a 6-2 lead. Belhaven continued to control the rest of the quarter, holding the Panthers offense to just 29.4% from the field, as they entered the second quarter with a 16-12 lead. Belhaven continued to control the pace of the game in the second quarter and kept the pressure on the Panthers by forcing six turnovers in the quarter. Ashanti Lipscomb jumper would elevate them to a 30-24 lead at the half.
The second half began with the Panthers slowly crawling back into the game. The Blazers kept their composure as
Allaijah Gamble connected on a three at the 1:52 mark to give Belhaven a 40-36 lead. The Blazers finished strong as
Xhiir Burgess capitalized on a layup to give the Blazers a 42-36 lead at the end of quarter three.
As the fourth quarter began, the Panthers managed to tie the game at 51 at the halfway mark. Much to the avail of Belhaven, the Panthers proceeded to go on an 11-2 run to open up the lead. Belhaven continued to fight back, but would fall short by a final score of 64-56.
The Blazers shot 34.3% from the field as a unit with
Xhiir Burgess leading all scorers in a strong day tallying 16 points and a season high 16 rebounds.
Allaijah Gamble played impactful minutes off the bench with 10 points while shooting 2-2 from beyond the arc.
Belhaven will return to play at home Friday January 26, where they will face the Huntingdon Hawks. Tip-off is set for 5:30 PM.
