MARYVILLE, Tenn. - The Belhaven Women's Basketball team returned to action after two postponements earlier this week, falling to Maryville 81-66 inside the Cooper Athletic Center on Saturday.
Ebony Gayden got her career day started with a bucket on the opening possession. The senior forward tallied 10 of the Blazers' 18 first-quarter points as the Scots held a 10-point lead after a quarter of play.
Belhaven began to chip away midway through the frame, and
Ty'Zeta Lomax's layup with just under two minutes left cut the Scots' lead to just one at 38-37. A late run by the hosts gave them a 46-37 advantage at the break.
Down 13 with 6:29 to play, the Blazers scored seven unanswered to draw within six with four minutes to go. However, Maryville responded with the game's final nine points to secure the win.
Gayden was a constant force all game long for the Blazers. The McComb, Miss. native poured in a career-high 31 points on 13-of-23 from the floor and 11 rebounds.
Xhiir Burgess joined Gayden in double figures with 14 points and six boards.
