Blazers Take Down Agnes Scott in CCS Doubleheader Split

JACKSON, Miss.- The Belhaven Volleyball team competed in a tri-match against Berea and Agnes Scott. The Blazers dropped the first match in straight sets against Berea, but responded with a dominating straight set victory over Agnes Scott.

In the first set, both teams squared off with points being traded back and forth. As the set came near the end, Berea jumped out ahead on a 6-0 run to which the Blazers struggled to recover from, dropping the set 25-20. After a close start in the second set, Berea jumped out to a massive 16-8 lead. Belhaven then scrapped and fought their way back into the match and tied it up at 23. The Blazers comeback effort fell short however, as the Mountaineers edged them out in the last stretch 25-23.

In the third set, the Blazers fell behind early once again, but managed to crawl back into it in the latter end trailing 20-17. However, the Blazers could not keep up with Berea's aggresive offense and would go on to lose the set 25-18.

Megan LaCour and Kylarr Martin led the Blazers in kills with LaCour having nine and Martin having five. Miriam Ateca displayed a fantastic showing by having 20 assists. Ateca also found her way defensively by having 11 digs with Kayla Robinson right behind her with ten.

In the first set of the second match, both teams showed up to play. The set continued to stay close as it progressed with no one moving forward having a huge lead. Tied up at 23, Belhaven made a great push and took the first set 25-23. In the second set, Belhaven came out rolling with a 9-3 lead to start. The Blazers offense continued to dominate the Scotties as they would take the set 25-12.

In the third set, Belhaven came out to a slower than expected start, falling behind 4-1. Belhaven did not allow their slow start to phase them, as they managed to take a 16-14 lead in the midway point. Belhaven then caught fire and closed out the Scotties in dominating fashion with a 9-0 run to win the set 25-14.

Rylee White was a force to be reckoned with by having 11 kills. Megan LaCour also did her part and contributed with seven. Miriam Ateca, much like the first match, controlled the pace of the Blazers with 25 assists. Several Blazers played fantastic on the defensive side. Megan LaCour and Kayla Robinson led the team in digs with nine as well as Miriam Ateca and Cailtin Torok producing seven.

Belhaven will return to action on Tuesday October 3 at 6:00 PM in Columbus where they will play the Mississippi University for Women.
