Blazers Pull Off Comeback Effort at MUW

COLUMBUS, Miss.- The Belhaven Volleyball team pulled off the comeback for the ages against the Mississippi University of Women. 

In the first set, the Blazers got off to a slow start falling behind 11-6. Belhaven continued to chip at the lead but MUW continued to control the set. The Blazers went on to lose 25-17. At the start of the second set, Belhaven kept going back and forth with MUW trailing 8-6 early. Despite the Blazers attempts, MUW went on an explosive 11-1 run and continued to dominate the rest of the set. Belhaven dropped the set 25-10. 

Belhaven found some life in the third set by getting off to a hot 9-3 start. MUW would not go away easily and continued to chip at the lead until the match was tied at 16. Belhaven maintained their led despite a last second push by MUW and took the set 25-21. The fourth set was an absolute nail-biter for both sides. As the set got deeper both teams were trading points left and right and no lead was ever truly formed. Belhaven made a lasts second push and forced a fifth set with a resounding 25-23 win. 

In the final set, the momentum shifted in favor of Belhaven. The Blazers used the fuel of their surreal comeback and did not look back as they left the W in the dust. Belhaven took the final set 15-8 to to cap off a remarkable comeback effort. 

Rylee White was an offensive juggernaut for the Blazers with 18 kills as well as Megan LaCour who provided ten on the day. Aniyah Tompkins was instrumental in the Blazer's come from behind victory by providing 40 assists. Belhaven was a force to be reckoned with defensively, as five Blazers had double digit digs on the day. Kayla Robinson proved to be the difference maker as she led the team with 24 digs. Megan LaCour and Olivia Johnson were also spectacular with 19 digs coming from LaCour and 11 from Johnson. Aniyah Tompkins and Cailtin Torok added extra leverage with the duo providing ten digs. 

The Blazers will look to continue their winnings ways as they travel to Macon, Georgia on Saturday October 7 to face Wesleyan in a CCS matchup. The match begins at 11:00 AM.
