Blazers Fall in CCS Tri-Match in Tennessee

MARYVILLE, Tenn. - The Belhaven Volleyball team dropped both of their CCS matches today against Maryville and Piedmont. 

In the first set, Belhaven came out very slow and fell behind to the Scots 10-4. The Blazers then went on a run and cut the lead down to two. However, Maryville went on another run and were able to control the rest of the set. Despite the best efforts of the Blazers, they dropped the set 25-17. 

In the second set, The Blazers set the tone early and took a quick 9-4 lead. The Scots rallied back and made the rest of the set interesting with both teams trading points. As the set got closer to the end, neither team managed to pull ahead. However,  Belhaven would end up outdueling the Scots and take the set 25-22. 

The third set was very close at the beginning with Maryville leading 10-8. Belhaven continued to go back and forth with the Scots through the rest of the duration of the set. In the end, Belhaven came up short 25-21. 

Maryville came out swinging in the fourth set to the Blazers avail and jumped out to a 13-5 lead. Belhaven continued to fight but they failed to keep up with the Scots and dropped the set 25-14. 

Emma Gardner led the way in kills for the Blazers by tallying 11 while Caitlin Torok provided seven of her own. Aniyah Tompkins also left her mark by dishing out 20 assists. Several Blazers made quite the defensive impact. Emma Gardner led the Blazers in digs with 16, as Kayla Robinson contributed with 14 of her own. Aniyah Tompkins also was a defensive presence with 10 digs. 

In the first set of their second match, Belhaven struggled early, falling behind 10-4. Piedmont continued to increase their lead and took a 19-11 lead. Belhaven then came to life and got to within two of the Lions. Belhaven's comeback effort fell short unfortunately and lost the set 25-22. 

In the second set, Belhaven started out slow once again and fell behind 8-2. The Blazers then rallied from beind and managed to tie the match at 12 after a 10-4 run. Both teams battled until the end, but Piedmont would come out on top 25-22. 

In the third set, Piedmont came out of the gates quickly with an 11-5 run to begin the match. Belhaven then went on a very impressive run towards the end of the match with their backs against the wall. The Blazers managed to take the set 26-24 in thrilling comeback fashion. 

The fourth set was met with both teams trading points back and forth. After being tied at 10, Piedmont went on a commanding 8-1 run much to the Blazers avail. Belhaven managed to make it interesting and cut the lead down to two. Despite the efforts of Belhaven, Piedmont took the set 25-22. 

Cailtin Torok and Megan LaCour led the Blazers in kills with both of them having ten. Rylee White also chipped in eight kills. Miriam Ateca and Aniyah Tompkins were tremendous in the assists department. Ateca led the way with 20, while Tompkins had 11. Several Blazers were huge defensively. Kayla Robinson had a phenomenal day providing 23 digs, while Emma Gardner had 16. Miriam Ateca found her way on the board with 11 digs as well. 

The Blazers will be back in action in Montgomery, Alabama to face the Huntingdon Hawks Wednesday September 27 at 6:00 PM.
