BEREA, Ky. - The Belhaven Women's Soccer team used a second half rally to come from behind against Berea on Saturday and earn victory in the Blazers' Collegiate Conference of the South opening match.
The first half was a struggle for Belhaven and just before the half hour mark, the hosts took the lead against the run of play. In the first half, Belhaven out shot Berea 14-2 and saw five shots of their own saved by the hosts goalkeeper.
In the 55th minute though, Belhaven got their equalizer as
Kaci Craft grabbed her team-leading third goal of the season with an important finished. Belhaven would then take the lead, less than five minutes later as
Kyla Shaw opened her 2023 account with a goal assisted by
Lizbeth Eslava.
Isabela Villagrand would add an insurance goal for Belhaven in the 75th minute as she displayed a tidy finish, burying a corner kick inside the far post and sealing the victory for the Blazers.
Belhaven was good value for their win, tallying 27 shots in total and 12 shots on target to the Mountaineers' two which both came in the first half. The Blazers also ended with 10 corner kicks and forced the Berea goalkeeper into nine saves.
The Blazers resume play on Monday when they host Tougaloo College at the Belhaven Bowl Stadium. Kickoff is set for 5:00 PM.
