MARYVILLE, Tenn. - The Belhaven Baseball team opened CCS play by taking the first two of a three-game set at No. 25 Maryville on Saturday, winning 5-2 in Game 1 before shutting out the Scots in Game 2 2-0. The Blazers are now 9-9 (2-0 CCS) and winners of six straight ballgames.
GAME ONE
In the series opener, the hosts got the scoring started in the 1st after pushing a run across via a wild pitch. The Blazers responded in the 3rd with a run of their own as
Matthew Charbonnet scampered home on a Maryville pitch to the backstop.
Both pitchers settled in throughout the middle innings as neither club could muster a run until the 7th inning. That's when the Belhaven offense broke things open. With runners on the corners and only one out,
Caleb Whittle greeted the new Scot reliever with a two-run triple to give Belhaven a 3-1 lead.
Dawson Albin followed that up with an RBI base hit of his own to extend the lead to three runs. He came around to score a few pitches later on a wild pitch to create a four-run cushion for the Blazers.
After six strong innings from starter
Harris Coleman, lefty reliever
Logan Goodreau retired the side in order in the 7th and 8th innings to keep the score 5-1 Blazers heading to the 9th.
Maryville was able to plate one off of Goodreau in the 9th, but that was all as Belhaven picked up a 5-2 win in the opener. Coleman was credited with the win, allowing just two hits over six innings, while Goodreau earned his first save of the season with three solid innings in relief.

GAME TWO
The second game of the twin bill proved to be a pitcher's duel throughout. The Blazers had an early scoring chance in the top of the 3rd, but Maryville was able to leave the bases loaded to keep the game scoreless.
Belhaven starter
Brett Sanchez was dialed in on the bump, keeping Maryville hitless until a two-out single in the bottom of the 4th.
In a similar fashion to Game 1, the Blazers finally broke through in the 7th.
Caleb Whittle once again came through with a clutch RBI single through the left side to score
Matthew Charbonnet and put Belhaven on the board.
Albin, the very next batter, singled in
Kyle McLaughlin to give Belhaven a 2-0 lead heading to the stretch. Maryville threatened after having runners at first and third with only one out in the home half, but Sanchez retired the next two batters to strand a couple of Scot baserunners.
Once again the Scots had a chance in the 9th after loading the bases with nobody out. Sanchez buckled down by inducing a strikeout, a pop-out, and a flyout to go the distance and give Belhaven their sixth win in a row.
It was Sanchez's seventh career shutout and his 15th complete game. In 33 starts in his Belhaven career, the junior All-American is now 22-6 with a 2.18 ERA.
