Baseball Secures Sweep of No. 25 Maryville with 5-3 Win in Extras

MARYVILLE, Tenn. – After taking the first two on Saturday, the Belhaven Baseball team completed the three-game sweep of No. 25 Maryville with a 5-3 extra-inning win on Sunday in Tennessee.

Pitching had the upper hand early as neither club could plate a run until the home half of the 6th. Maryville put together a two-out rally to score the game's first run on an RBI double.

The Blazers immediately responded. After the book closed on the Maryville starter, Owen Abney greeted the new arm with a one-out double. Nathan Herron then delivered with a game-tying RBI single.

After a scoreless bottom of the 7th, Matthew Charbonnet led the 8th off with a single. Back-to-back one-out singles from Hunter Estes and Nick Lucido broke the tie and gave Belhaven a 2-1 lead.

The home team answered with two in the bottom half to retake the lead. Down to their last three outs and needing a run to tie, Herron led the inning off with a single to left.

After back-to-back outs, Charbonnet reached first after a throwing error, allowing the tying run in Herron to score.

Reliever Will Swift worked around a pair of one-out walks in the 9th by inducing a huge 6-4-3 double play ball to send the game to extras.

Herron once again came through in a big spot for the Blazers. Belhaven's third baseman laced a two-run double into the right-center field gap to give the Blazers a 5-3 lead.

Swift returned to the mound in the 10th looking to close the deal, and the sophomore righthander did just that. Swift got the tying run to ground out to first to end it and give Belhaven an impressive CCS series sweep over the 25th-ranked Scots.
