Softball Splits Opening Day at The Spring Games

KISSIMMEE, Fla. - The Belhaven Softball team split their first day at 'The Spring Games' on Saturday as they run-ruled UW-River Falls 8-0 in the opener before falling to the College of St. Benedict 5-2 to close the day.

GAME ONE

In the first game of the day the Blazers' bats got off to a quick start as Sydney Runnels opened the scoring on an RBI single in the top of the 1st. In the same inning Kennedy Carruth grabbed her first home run of the season with a three-run shot to put the Blazers ahead 4-0.

The Blazers added another run in the inning on Katie Jo Richardson's RBI single before going in front 6-0 in the 2nd inning on another Carruth RBI hit. The Blazers added a run in the 3rd and another in the 4th as they cruised to the 8-0 victory over the University of Wisconsin-River Falls.

GAME TWO

In the second game of the day the Blazers fell to the College of St. Benedict by a 5-2 final score. After both clubs went scoreless in the 1st inning it was St. Benedict who struck first capitalizing on a few defensive miscues by the Blazers and pushed across four runs.

Belhaven got one of those runs back in the bottom half of the 2nd inning but St. Benedict lead 4-1 after two frames. Both teams went scoreless in the 3rd inning and Belhaven was able to get another run back in the bottom of the 4th on an RBI single by Katie Jo Richardson.

However St. Benedict pulled the run back in the 5th inning and the Blazers were unable to chip further into their 5-2 lead.

The Blazers will ready for their second day at The Spring Games tomorrow as they take on SUNY Geneseo at 10:30 AM before facing Western New England University at 1:00 PM.
