MARYVILLE, Tenn. - The Belhaven Men's Basketball team is bound for the Championship Game in the Collegiate Conference of the South tournament after taking down LaGrange 85-68 in the Semifinal Round.
The Blazers led wire to wire in the dominant display as they took down the #3 seed in the tournament and put themselves in a position to play for the conference title. Belhaven was strong from the opening tip-off scoring the first seven points on the contest before the Panthers got on the board.
Belhaven continued to have the advantage on both ends of the floor as the first half continued and took a 12-4 lead into the first media timeout. Out of that first stoppage,
Matthew McMillan provided an immediate spark to the BU offense off the bench going 3-3 on three-pointers and forcing LaGrange into a timeout.
The theme of the game was Belhaven providing an answer to every LaGrange run and at the end of the first half, the Blazers led 41-25 maintaining their double-digit advantage.
Out of the halftime interval the Blazers once again had an answer for everything the Panthers threw at them and within the first five minutes of the half a 12-4 run had BU up by 24 on LC. With Belhaven in control as the game continued, the Blazers were consistent in keeping distance between themselves and LaGrange.
With just under three minutes to go in the contest, the Blazers had a strong 84-62 lead and despite LaGrange outscoring Belhaven in the final few minutes, the Blazers cruised to the 85-68 win.Â
On the day Belhaven was led by
Jordan Marshall who scored a game-high 23 points on 9-15 shooting while going 4-6 from beyond the arc.
Matthew McMillan tacked on 19 points in 20 minutes of action, draining six threes and providing four assists.
With 14 points and 9 rebounds
Luke Couch finished just shy of a double-double while
Damien Wheaton added 14 points and 7 boards on an efficient 7-8 shooting night.
Neal Terry also tied a historic mark as his lone block pulls him even with the single-season record for blocks (72) set by Bobby Johnson in 2006-2007.Â
Now Belhaven will await their opponent for tomorrow's CCS Championship Game as #1 seeded Maryville and #5 seeded Piedmont square off in the other Semfinal game tonight. Game time for tomorrow's final is set for 2:00 PM Central and will be hosted in Maryville, Tennessee.Â
