MARYVILLE, Tenn. - The Belhaven Men's Basketball team saw their tournament run come to a close on Saturday as they fell just short in the Collegiate Conference of the South Championship Game. The Blazers, who were the #2 seed in the tournament, were downed by the #1 seed and hosts, Maryville College, 84-74.
The Scots started the game with sharp-shooting from beyond the arc and jumped out to an early lead on the Blazers. Belhaven worked to keep pace despite the hosts first four made shots coming from beyond the arc but at the first media timeout, Maryville led 26-16.
Maryville continued to maintain a double-digit lead as the first half wore on and at the halftime break led 46-31 over the Blazers. After the break the Scots immediately pushed out to their biggest lead of the game to that point, 17 points but Belhaven responded with a 6-0 run to cut the Scots lead back down to 11 points.
The game remained a story of Belhaven surges and Maryville's answers with the Blazers unable to make a sustained run to cut into the deficit. In the final minutes Belhaven was able to claw await the hosts' advantage thanks to some impressive made three-pointers but the rally ran out of time in the end.
In the game, four Blazers finished in double figures with both
Matthew McMillan and
Jordan Marshall tallying 16 points.
Judah Jordan grabbed a double-double on the day with 14 points and 12 rebounds while
Damien Wheaton ended the day with 13 points.
Belhaven finishes the season 15-12 overall and 7-5 in conference regular season play. The Blazers, who were picked to finish last in the CCS Preseason Poll, put together an impressive run to earn the #2 seed in the tournament and then knocked off #7 Huntingdon along with #3 LaGrange to reach the tournament final.
