LAGRANGE, Ga. – The Belhaven Women's Basketball team got back on track on Saturday afternoon, handling LaGrange 82-67 for an impressive road win. The Blazers improved to 15-7 (9-5 CCS) with the victory.
After the hosts took a 5-1 lead, the Blazers responded with a 14-1 run to take control in the first quarter. Belhaven led by as many as eight before taking a 22-17 lead after a quarter of play.
Belhaven continued to control the game in the second frame, using a 17-4 run over the span of eight minutes to take a 43-26 lead into the halftime break. The Blazers outscored LaGrange 21-9 in the quarter to seize the momentum.
The Panthers never threatened in the second half as Belhaven was able to extend its lead out to 24 at 68-44 in the third quarter.
Ebony Gayden's layup with 4:07 to play gave the Blazers their largest lead of the game at 79-50, and the Blazers coasted the rest of the way for a dominant 82-67 win.
Four Blazers finished in double figures, with Gayden leading the way with 19 points and 10 rebounds.
Xhiir Burgess finished with 13 points and six boards, while
Shantashia John added 15 points and nine assists.
Allaijah Gamble recorded 12 points off the bench on a perfect 5-for-5 from the field.
The Blazers will close out the regular season next weekend, with Wesleyan (Friday, Feb. 17) and Berea (Saturday, Feb. 18) paying visits to Rugg Arena. Tipoff is set for 5 PM Friday between the Wolves and Blazers.
