JACKSON, Miss. - The Belhaven Women's Basketball team grabbed one of their largest wins of the season on Friday taking down Wesleyan College by a 96-36 scoreline in the penultimate game of the regular season.
The Blazers were in control from opening tip against the Wolves as they scored the first 15 points of the first quarter. The Blazers' three-point shooting was locked in early and just past the halfway point of the opening quarter Belhaven led 25-4.
Leading 36-6 after a quarter of play, Belhaven would then open up the second quarter with a 15-0 scoring run. The Blazers scoring was coming from all levels and Belhaven cruised to halftime by outscoring the visitors 29-5 in the second quarter and a 55-11 overall.
The hefty advantage meant that the Blazers could get a lot of players some significant action. In the third quarter Belhaven's depth continued to show as they kept outpacing Wesleyan on both ends of the floor. A
Xhiir Burgess layup at the end of the quarter sent Belhaven into the final frame with a 78-18 lead.
In the fourth quarter the Blazers continued to hold their significant lead against short runs from the visitors. In the end the Blazers finished off the win with their largest margin of victory of the 2022-23 season. Belhaven improves to 16-7 on the year and sit tied for third in the Collegiate Conference of the South standings.
Shantashia John led the way for the Blazers with 17 points while going 5-8 from three.
Toi Robinson tacked on a career-high 12 points while pulling down 5 rebounds.
Belhaven will have seeding to play for on Saturday as they host Berea College in the final game of the year while also recognizing Senior Day. Tip off Saturday is set for 2 PM.
