MONTGOMERY, Ala. - The Belhaven Women's Basketball team saw their five-game win streak come to a close on Friday as they lost 79-72 in a double overtime thriller at Huntingdon.
Belhaven got off to a good start against the Hawks taking the lead in the early minutes of the first quarter. Despite Belhaven running their lead out to 11-2 in the first few minutes, Huntingdon was able to draw back to within a possession by the end of the opening quarter.
Early in the second quarter Huntingdon was able to work themselves into the lead with a brief scoring run that put them in front 18-15. The Blazers though were able to take advantage of their size in the paint with
Xhiir Burgess,
Hayle Poindexter and
Ty'Zeta Lomax scoring on three straight possessions to put BU back in control.
Belhaven led 32-26 at the half and seemed poised to try to open up a large lead on the hosts. With 2:05 to go in the third quarter Belhaven held their biggest lead of the game, 14 points, and the Blazers led by 13 heading into the fourth.
Despite the double-digit advantage the Blazers weren't able to hang on in regulation with Huntingdon fighting their way back into it and forcing overtime. In the first OT the Hawks took control but a pair of corner three-pointers by
Shantashia John nearly gave Belhaven the win. A Hawks' buzzer beating layup forced a second overtime and in the next five minutes Belhaven was unable to keep pace falling 79-72 in the end.
Belhaven will look for a quick bounce back as they make the overnight trip to Georgia to square off against LaGrange. Tip off against the Panthers is set for 1 PM CT.
