Blazers Push Past MUW 83-79

JACKSON, Miss. - After trailing at the halftime break, Belhaven stormed back to overtake MUW, 83-79, on Wednesday night at Rugg Arena. The Blazers improved to 10-9 (5-3 CCS) with the non-conference win.

Belhaven jumped out to a quick 6-2 lead, but a 6-0 run by the Owls propelled them to an 8-6 advantage with 14:41 to play in the first half. Both teams traded baskets over the course of the first 20 minutes as neither team led by more than four until the 1:43 mark. An Owl three-pointer with 59 seconds remaining gave MUW its biggest lead of the half at six, but a pair of Luke Couch free throws cut the deficit to 37-33 heading into the locker room.

After an Owl three put them up 49-42, the Blazers made their run. Matthew McMillan connected from long range to draw within three before Judah Jordan finished a tough and-one layup to tie things up at 49. McMillan followed that up with a steal and a transition three to put the Blazers in front with 12 minutes to go.

McMillan knocked down his third three on the next offensive possession to give Belhaven a four-point lead. It was McMillan's 180th career three-pointer, tying Jordan Bedford for the most in Belhaven history. The Owls would draw even, however, at 56 apiece with 10:04 left in regulation. Belhaven answered with a 9-0 run to take control, but once again MUW responded with a 13-7 run of their own to draw within three.

Luke Couch's three-pointer extended the Blazers' lead to six, and history was made at the 2:57 mark when McMillan hit No. 181 to put Belhaven up 78-69. After MUW got within two at 81-79 late, Couch calmly knocked down two free throws with eight seconds left to seal the win.

Couch led Belhaven with 25 points on an efficient 7-of-10 from the floor. Jordan Marshall finished with 17 points. Judah Jordan added 15. On his historic night, McMillan finished with 14 points on a perfect 4-for-4 from beyond the arc. The sharpshooter has hit 181-of-416 (44%) from three-point range over his four-year career.

The Blazers return to Rugg Arena this Saturday, February 4th to host CCS foe Covenant. Tipoff is slated for 4 PM.
