JACKSON, Miss.- The Belhaven Women's Basketball Team fell short in their home opener against Pensacola Christian 82-50.
Both teams got off to a quick start in the first quarter with the score being tied at eight in the first few minutes. Unfortunately for the Blazers, the Eagles went on an 8-0 run to gain the advantage near the end of the quarter. Belhaven would enter the second quarter behind 21-10. Belhaven got off to a good start in the second quarter, cutting the deficit to eight. The Eagles unfortunately continued their hot streak and went on a 10-2 run to jump ahead 35-19. Belhaven's struggles continued to mount up and would enter into the half trailing 44-24.
The second half began with the Blazers getting on the board first and cutting into the lead. The Eagles continued to control the pace of the game as the quarter moved forward. The Blazers continued to push but would head into the fourth behind 67-42. The fourth quarter was another slow quarter for the Blazers as the Eagles went on a 12-4 run. The Blazers would go on to fall to the Eagles for a final score of 82-50.
The Blazers struggled from the field shooting 33.3% from the field overall and 31.6% from three.
Venita Williams and
Ashanti Lipscomb led the Blazers in points with each having seven.
Hayle Poindexter was solid for Belhaven by posting up four points and pulling down 10 rebounds.
Belhaven will look to redeem themselves on Tuesday, December 12 as they have a rematch with Birmingham-Southern who they faced earlier this year. Tip off will begin at 2:00 PM.
