Blazers Drop Close Contest Against BSC

JACKSON, Miss.- The Belhaven Women's basketball team dropped their home contest to Birmingham-Southern 65-57 Tuesday afternoon.

The Blazers got off to a fast 8-4 start to begin the contest and grab an early advantage. The first quarter was a very defensive minded effort from both squads, who forced several turnovers. The Panthers would go on to end the quarter on a 7-2 run to take an 11-10 lead heading into the second. Belhaven started the second quarter slow falling behind by eight after the Panthers went on a 7-0 run. Belhaven continued to struggle as the Panthers increased their lead to as much as 10. Belhaven managed to cut the lead down to seven after a few baskets to head into the half down 31-24.

Belhaven got off on the right foot in the third by tying the score at 31 after a much needed 7-0 run. The Blazers and the Panthers continued to trade buckets for the rest of the quarter with BSC taking a 46-43 lead heading into the fourth. The start of the fourth continued to be a back and forth affair for both sides. Unfortunately for Belhaven, the Panthers managed to gain the upper hand after a 10-1 run to take a ten point lead. The Blazers managed to get to within five but would unfortunately fall just short 65-57.

The Blazers struggled to convert from the field, shooting 32.4% on the day. Ty'Zeta Lomax proved to be a great spark off the bench for the Blazers, leading them with 14 points off 5-9 shooting. Ashanti Lipscomb was also effective for the Blazers finishing with 11 points and seven rebounds while Hayle Poindexter controlled the glass and defense for the Blazers by scoring eight points, grabbing 10 rebounds, and blocking three shots.

The Blazers will look to start conference play on the right note as they face Wesleyan in Jackson on Thursday, December 14. Tip off will start at 2:00 PM.
