JACKSON, Miss.- The Belhaven Women's Basketball team opened up their conference play slate in ideal fashion as they took down the Wesleyan Wolves 84-50 and earned their first victory at home this season.
The first quarter was a showcase of dominance for the Blazers offensively and defensively. Belhaven controlled the momentum for the entire quarter and went into quarter two with a 20-1 lead. The second quarter began with the Wolves slowly crawling their way back into the game, cutting the lead to 14. However, after a few baskets from
Hayle Poindexter, the Blazers pushed their lead to as much as 20 and went into the second half with a commanding 45-25 lead.
The third quarter showed no signs of stopping from Belhaven as
Hayle Poindexter and
Ebony Gayden continued to be a great one two punch for the Blazers. The Blazers offense continued to be a force to be reckoned with as they entered the fourth with a 64-40 lead. Belhaven began to run away with it in the fourth and pushed their lead to 34. The Blazers would go on to cruise their way to an 84-50 win as they start conference play on a high note.
The Blazers shot tremendous from the field, going 44.6% from the field total as well as dominating the rebound battle 56-34.
Hayle Poindexter had a career day by scoring a career high 24 points on a very efficient 66.7% from the field while also grabbing seven rebounds.
Ebony Gayden dominated in the paint and on the glass by scoring 20 points and grabbing a career high 16 rebounds.
Brookelynn Saxon was once again all over the place as she finished with three points, nine rebounds, and a career high six steals.
Belhaven will look to capitalize off their dominant performance as they face LaGrange on Tuesday, January 2. Tip-off will be at 5:30 PM.
