JACKSON, Miss.- The Belhaven Women's Basketball team fell to the University of Dallas in a tough 79-73 loss on day one of the Millsaps fall Classic.
The Blazers struggled early as the Crusaders took an early 10-0 lead to begin the game. Belhaven then proceeded to close the quarter on an 11-2 run to only trail 12-11 after the first. Belhaven got a good start in quarter two as they took a 20-16 lead with five minutes until the half. Both teams traded points with the Crusaders jumping ahead to a 30-28 lead at the half.
Belhaven started the third quarter slow after an explosive 11-2 run was made by Dallas to take a 41-30 lead. The Blazers crawled their way back into the game as the end of the third quarter approached and trailed 52-51 heading into the fourth. After falling behind by as much as eight, Belhaven stormed back and cut the lead to three with less than two minutes remaining. Despite the best efforts of the Blazers, the comeback effort fell short as Belhaven fell 79-72.
As a team, the Blazers struggled from the field by shooting 25.4% from the field and 29% from three,
Hayle Poindexter led the charge for the Blazers with 17 points and 11 rebounds off the bench while shooting 15-17 from the free throw line.
Shantashia John followed up with 15 points while
Ty'Zeta Lomax contributed with 13 points and eight rebounds.
The Blazers will look to get their first win of the year as they face St. Thomas Sunday, November 19 on what will be the final day of the Millsaps Fall Classic. Tip off will begin at 12:00 PM.
