JACKSON, Miss.- The Belhaven Women's Basketball Team grabbed their first win of the 2023-24 campaign by taking down St. Thomas 64-59 in the last day of the Millsaps Fall Classic. 

The first quarter was a slow start for both teams who were struggling to shoot. Midway through the first, after the Blazers took an 8-6 lead, the Celts jumped out to a 10-0 run to take a 16-8 lead into the second quarter. Belhaven came out firing on all cylinders in the second quarter by putting together an impressive 14-5 run to reclaim the lead. Both teams continued to go back and forth with the Blazers gaining the upper hand with a 28-24 lead at the half.

Belhaven continued to stay hot in the second half as they started out the third quarter on an 11-2 run. Belhaven continued to showcase their dominance for the rest of the quarter, and went into the fourth with a comfortable 54-35 lead. At the beginning of the fourth, the Celts posted a 10-0 run to bring the game back to within single digits. As the game neared the end, St. Thomas continued to make a run at the Blazers, and only trailed 62-59 with 30 seconds remaining. After a pair of clutch free throws, the Blazers managed to survive, taking home the victory 64-59. 

The Blazers shot their best from the field so far this season at 42.2% and shot 33.3% from three. Shantashia John led the Blazers with 22 points and recording a career high four steals. Hayle Poindexter was also efficient for the Blazers by putting up 10 points on 50% shooting. Ty'Zeta Lomax was the difference maker off the bench for Belhaven by scoring 10 points and pulling down seven rebounds on the day. 

The Blazers will return to play on Tuesday, November 21 as they travel to Birmingham to face Birmingham-Southern. Tip off will begin at 2:00 PM.
